Caring and Fellowship
The mission of the committee is to maintain a membership roster and to provide programs of care and fellowship for all members. The congregation is divided into six Caring Groups of approximately 20 to 30 family units per group. The groups have been organized by similar interests such as families with children, active retirees, etc. The committee of Caring Group leaders meets bi-monthly to plan fellowship events and review activities of the individual Caring Groups and to review attendance records so that members who have not regularly attended church can be contacted.
During the year Caring Groups may hold individual social events and provide care for members in need within their groups. Caring Groups also take on projects such as providing a nursery, making suppers during the Advent midweek services, visiting shut-ins, encouraging members to attend church regularly and organizing ushers and greeters for each service. Caring Groups also are responsible for organizing coffee hours, decorating the church for Christmas and organizing the Easter Breakfast, Christmas pot luck dinner and Rally Day congregational dinner. They also organize well-attended congregational social events throughout the year such as Canton Symphony Pops Concerts, plays, Cleveland Indians ball games and bus tours.

WELCA WELCA is the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church unit of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. We are part of the Canton-Massillon Cluster, the Northeast Synod, and the churchwide WELCA organization. Participation is open to all women in the congregation. At present there are two circles that meet monthly, except July and August, for bible study and fellowship. Hannah Circle meets the first Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. and Hope Circle meets the second Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Three evening general meetings are held in March, September, and December.
Project Days are held the second Tuesday of each month. Projects include the assembling of health kits, sewing kits, and quilts for Lutheran World Relief and comfort kits for the Red Cross. Members also collect Acme grocery receipts for the summer lunch program, cancelled postage stamps, Campbell soup labels, and used eye glasses. WELCA members take care of bereavement dinners, the library, the kitchen, assigning communion duty, and flower wrapping. Care bears are placed in the front church pews to be given to anyone in need of comfort.
Each year WELCA presents a congregational thankoffering service with the offering going to the churchwide WELCA organization to be used for grants and scholarships. Throughout the year the group also contributes to a ministerial student fund, the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission in Arizona, the Lutheran Women’s League at St. Luke’s, and various other charities and church projects including the Community Christmas Fund.
